Following his conviction for illegal gun possession, the President's son Hunter Biden has lost his license to practice law in the US capital Washington for the time being. His license will be suspended "with immediate effect" in view of the conviction, according to an order published on Tuesday by an appeals court in Washington. The responsible committee of the bar association in Washington is to initiate disciplinary proceedings and deal with the question of whether Hunter Biden is still allowed to work as a lawyer.

At the beginning of June, Hunter Biden was found guilty by a jury in the state of Delaware of making false statements when buying a gun in October 2018 and concealing his drug addiction at the time. The president's son denies this. He faces a prison sentence of several years. The sentence will not be handed down until a later date. However, as he has no previous convictions, the 54-year-old could get off without going to prison.

Hunter Biden is a graduate of Yale Law School and has worked as a lawyer and business lobbyist in the past. He was admitted to the Washington bar in 2007, but according to media reports, he has not used it very actively in the recent past. In what is already a politically heated election year, the son's negative headlines provide President Joe Biden's opponents with plenty of scope for attack.
