Over the next few weeks, the entire road network of Appenzell Ausserrhoden will be covered with special measuring vehicles. The 3D images will then be used to plan the long-term maintenance of the roads.

The cantonal chancellery announced on Wednesday that the measurement vehicles are scheduled to make their rounds in July and August. The "Infra3D" system will be used. This allows the lateral buildings and facilities to be photographed and measured with laser scanners.

The images are then measured in three dimensions on the computer, compared with existing geodata and digitized. Due to data protection regulations, people and number plates on the images are anonymized.

In the past, road inspectors from the Civil Engineering Department used to spend days on foot to assess the condition of roads. Today, a measuring vehicle can be used for this purpose.
