The mobile recycling stations will gradually replace the Cargotram and E-Tram, as the city council announced on Wednesday. One-off expenditure of CHF 3.9 million and annual recurring expenditure of CHF 1.6 million are planned.
The service has so far been used on a trial basis in districts without cargo streetcars. The aim now is to reach as many people as possible in their neighborhoods.
The service is free of charge for the people of Zurich. However, there are also restrictions: Access by car is not permitted due to limited space and to avoid additional traffic in the neighborhood.
Avoiding waste on the Josefsareal site
The city council is planning a temporary waste prevention service on the Josefsareal. From 2025 to 2028, "Josy" will enable the public to pass on items in good condition. Repairs will also be possible. A catering offer with a focus on avoiding food waste and sustainable nutrition will create a place for people to meet and exchange ideas.
The city council is asking parliament for a loan of CHF 5.4 million for "Josy". The site of the former waste incineration plant will be available for interim use until 2029.
