For Viktorija Golubic, the first round at the tennis tournament in Paris is the end of the line. The 31-year-old from Zurich loses 3:6, 4:6 to American Jessica Pegula despite a good start.

Golubic was unable to threaten the world number six despite an appealing performance. The number 79 in the rankings started well, leading 2:0 and 3:1, but then she lost her rhythm and lost eight games in a row before going 1:3 down in the second set.

The second set developed into a real break festival. Although she was only able to get through one of her five service games, Golubic showed her fighting spirit and fought back with all her might to avoid elimination. But after 77 minutes, Pegula was able to convert her fifth match point.

Three years ago in Tokyo, Golubic lost in the 2nd round of the singles to Naomi Osaka. In the doubles, she stormed through to the final together with the eventual Olympic singles champion Belinda Bencic, but the Swiss women had to settle for silver. Golubic will not be competing in doubles in Paris.
