Hungary's players have criticized the medical treatment of Barnabás Varga. The association and tournament director Lahm have now responded to the accusations. The striker has since undergone surgery.

UEFA has defended itself against the accusations made by some Hungarian players that the medical treatment of attacker Barnabás Varga, who suffered a serious facial injury, was delayed.

"The coordination between all the medical staff on site was professional, everything happened in accordance with the applicable medical procedures," the association told Deutsche Presse-Agentur on Monday. "There was no delay in the treatment and care of the player."

Varga collided with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn in the 68th minute of the Magyars' late 1-0 win. According to the Hungarian association, he suffered several facial fractures and a concussion. Initially, he lay almost motionless on the pitch. Among others, teammate Dominik Szoboszlai complained after the final whistle that the paramedics had taken too long to attend to Varga.

"Of course we'll look into it and look into it - definitely," said former international and tournament director Philipp Lahm in Leipzig, announcing talks following the incident. You always have to adjust things.

Varga underwent surgery on Monday, his father Andras Varga confirmed to the Hungarian sports daily "Nemzeti Sport". The operation went well and the Ferencvaros Budapest attacker should be able to leave hospital on Wednesday. Varga was already in a stable condition during the night. Nevertheless, the shock of what had happened was profound.
